Building the Cabin – Part 1 – Planning and Marking out the Site

Alice and I decided to locate a cabin at the large dam which will be our primary accomadation for the next few years. Below is a video I put together of the initial stages. There has been a lot of plannng put into this. The majority of structural materials will come from the place and the cost of construction minimised.

In the foreground you can see the large dam which has been stocked with silver perch and bass. It is already teeming with yabbies, small fish and birdlife. The water is clear and cold. The aspect is north-easterly with strong win protection from the forest to the west and good shade trees in place.

This is a long term project and I will set out the “how to” over a series of videos. For us, it is a huge learning exerience with plans changing frequently. The curent plan is that this will be a horiztonal slab wall construction of 12m x 6m. It will have one 3m x 4m bedroom, a 2m x 3m bathroom, a 6m x 6m living space including kitchen and 6m x 3m verandah.
